My Colorful Summer

7/24/2024

Its not everyday Kubert School and Archie Comics legend, Fernando Ruiz, asks to speak with you in his office. The questions start flooding in. What is this about? Did I do something wrong? Does he know Im behind on Tom's homework? It turns out, my anxiety was wrong once again. The topic of conversation in reality, was a job offer.

I was asked to color a variant cover Archie Comics Judgment Day #1 drawn by Fernando himself. Even though I had never really thought of myself as a colorist, I had no hesitation accepting this amazing opportunity. To my surprise, neither Fernando nor the client had major issues with my finished work, and one job led to the next. Two months later and we have completed 9 covers for Archie Comics. I even got to Ink the two beach covers (email me if you're interested in the original inks).

This job has kept me good and busy while I continue to build my portfolio and search for penciling work. My personal favorites are the connecting Betty and Veronica covers where they're laying on the couches. Im really happy with the contrasting vibes of the two rooms. At the Kubert School, the teachers would very often encourage versatility in order to have as many job opportunities as possible. Even though coloring was never my favorite (sorry Jan!), I treated the classes and assignments as seriously as I did my drawing and narrative art classes, and I am really glad I did. I am truly honored to have this opportunity and to work with Fernando and Archie comics. Thanks again Fernando!

ps. Go team Veronica.
